Following a diplomatic scandal between Male and Delhi, Indian tourists began boycotting holidays on the islands in the Indian Ocean. Official statistics from the Maldives Ministry of Tourism show that the region received 16,536 Indian visitors at the beginning of February. In comparison, 23,972 tourists (11.2% market share) have flown in from China, making it the country with the highest number of arrivals. It is worth noting that Maldives’ new President Maizzou recently visited Beijing, which led to the island nation being added to the list of countries with which China intends to sign a mutual visa co-operation agreement. Thanks to the rapid reorientation of the Maldives’ tourism industry, it has managed to maintain high growth rates and avoid financial losses. The current president has announced the opening of 20 new resort zones in the archipelago in 2024.
